What to expect on your first dispensary visit

Bring a valid ID and come in. You do not need a medical card to buy in Montana if you are 21 or over. Here is how the visit goes, what the label numbers mean, and what to say at the counter.

  1. Step 1

    Show your ID at the door

    Bring an unexpired government-issued photo ID. Everyone shows one on the way in, every visit, including regulars. Without it there is no sale.

  2. Step 2

    Tell the counter it is your first time

    A budtender walks the cases with you. Say what you are curious about and what you would rather avoid. There is no wrong question at the counter.

  3. Step 3

    Read the label before you pick

    Every product is tested and labeled. The label is the honest number, not the strain name on the front of the jar.

  4. Step 4

    Pay in the store

    You pay at the counter when you pick up. The ordering system does not take payment online, and it lists cash at the register.

Adult-use customers 21 and over buy with a photo ID alone. Registered Montana medical patients are served here too. Bring your card if you have one, because a patient purchase is rung against your registration.

How to read what is on the package

Every product in a licensed Montana dispensary is tested and labeled. Two numbers do most of the work.

Percentages on flower and concentrates
THC and CBD are printed as a percentage of the product by weight. A higher THC percentage means a stronger product, not a better one. CBD is a separate number and does not add to the THC figure.
Milligrams on edibles and drinks
Edibles are labeled in milligrams of THC per piece and per package. Read the per-piece number and check how many pieces are in the package, because those two are not the same figure.

If you want to start lower, say so. Ask the budtender to show you the lowest-potency option in the format you want, and read the label together before you buy. Edibles take longer to come on than anything you inhale, which the edibles guide walks through.

Do I need a medical card to buy cannabis in Montana?
