Dabs and concentrates explained

What a concentrate is

Cannabis flower carries its active compounds in resin glands on the surface of the plant. A concentrate strips those glands off the plant material and collects them. What remains is mostly resin and very little leaf, which is why the tested potency runs several times higher than flower.

The word dab refers to how many concentrates get used: a small portion heated on a hot surface and inhaled as vapor. Dab and concentrate get used interchangeably on menus, though not every concentrate is meant for dabbing.

Solventless versus solvent-based

Every concentrate falls into one of two production families, and the split explains most of the price differences you see in the case.

Solventless methods use only heat, pressure, water, ice, and screens. Nothing chemical touches the material.

• Hash and bubble hash separate resin glands using ice water and mesh screens, then dry the collected material.
• Rosin presses flower or hash between heated plates and squeezes the resin out. Live rosin starts from fresh frozen plant material rather than dried flower and typically sits at the top of the price range.
• Kief is the loose resin that sifts off dry flower through a screen, including in the bottom chamber of a grinder.

Solvent-based methods use a solvent, usually butane, propane, or CO2, to dissolve the resin off the plant. The solvent then gets purged out under heat and vacuum. Montana requires licensed lab testing on these products, and residual solvent is one of the things labs test for.

• Shatter is a hard, glassy, translucent slab.
• Wax, budder, and badder are whipped or agitated during the purge, which gives a softer, opaque texture.
• Sugar and sauce carry visible crystalline structure suspended in a liquid terpene layer.
• Live resin starts from fresh frozen plant material, which preserves more of the volatile terpenes that dry and cure drive off. It is the reason live resin tastes more like the living plant than a standard extract does.
• Distillate runs the extract through further refinement until mostly a single cannabinoid remains. It is clear, close to odorless, and highly potent, and it is the base for most vape cartridges and many edibles. Refinement strips the terpenes, so any flavor in a distillate product got added back.

Texture does not equal quality

Shatter, badder, and sugar can come from the same starting material and the same run. Texture follows how the extract was handled during the purge, and temperature and agitation drive it. Some extracts also change texture on their own over time, which is normal and not a defect.

What separates a good concentrate from a poor one is the input material, the care in the extraction, and the lab results. Not the shape it took in the jar.

How they get used

Dab rig or e-rig. A small portion touched to a heated surface, usually quartz, and inhaled as vapor.

Vape cartridge or disposable. Concentrate in a sealed cartridge, heated by a battery. This is by a wide margin the most common way concentrate gets sold and used.

Added to flower. Kief or a small piece of hash on top of ground flower.

Infused pre-rolls. Flower rolled with concentrate mixed in or coated on.

Montana rules that apply

State law limits an adult 21 or over to 1 ounce of usable marijuana, and no more than 8 grams of that may be in concentrated form. The Department of Revenue treats 8 grams of concentrate as equivalent to 1 ounce of flower when converting a mixed purchase against the limit, so a basket with both gets counted together.

Registered cardholders convert against their own daily and monthly ceilings at the same ratio.

Everything on a licensed shelf carries testing from a licensed Montana lab, and the results are printed on the label or available on request.

At the counter

Concentrates are potent by design, and the potency figure on the label is not comparable to a flower percentage in any intuitive way. If you are moving to concentrate from flower, the amount you use per session changes by an order of magnitude, and the number on the jar will not tell you where to land.

Ask what the starting material was, whether the product is solventless or solvent-based, and what the lab found. Keep concentrates cool and sealed, since heat and air degrade the terpenes that carry the flavor. And check what hardware you own before you buy, because a product built for a dab rig does not work in a cartridge battery.
